Family​

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehruji’s full name was Jawaharlal Motilal Nehru. He was born on 14 November 189 in Allahabad (North-Western Province, British India).

His father Mr. Motilal Nehru was a lawyer. His mother’s name was Swarooprani Nehru.

Jawaharlal ji was the only son of his parents. He had three sisters. His wife’s name was Kamala Nehru.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehruji had only one daughter, whom we know as Indira Gandhi. Who later went on to become a successful Prime Minister.

Education​

He did his schooling at Harrow School and his college education at Trinity College London. Later, he went to Cambridge University to pursue a law degree. He returned to India in 1912 after completing his education at Cambridge School.


Contribution​

When he came to Swades in 1912, India was completely submerged under the power of the British. Together with the rest of the freedom fighters, he joined the fight to make India independent. Then he met Mahatma Gandhi. Impressed by Gandhiji, he joined the Indian National Congress in 1919.

He had to go to jail many times in the freedom struggle. He was arrested in 1972 during the ‘Quit India’ movement and stayed in Ahmednagar jail. He organized the first peasant march in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh in 1920.

In 1926, he was injured in protest against the Simon Commission in Lucknow. He was arrested by the British government in the 1930s Salt Movement. At that time, he remained in jail for 6 months.

In 1935, he wrote his autobiography in Almora jail.

When India got independence in 1949, he was elected the first Prime Minister of independent India. He continued in this position till his death in 1949.

He extended a friendly hand towards China during his tenure but did not get success.

He loved children very much. Hence his birthday is celebrated as ‘Baladin’.

After Independence, Panditji has played a big role in making independent India prosperous. He did important work in many areas like education, social reform, economic sector, national security and industrialization.

In the field of education, he established several universities, IITs, IIMs.

In industrial sector, Bhakra Nangal Dam, Rihand Dam and Bokaro Steel Plant were established by him.

In 1951, he started the Five Year Plans, which Indians are still reaping the benefits of.

1He, along with Josip Buroz Tito and Abdul Gamal Nasir, created the Non-Aligned Movement to end colonialism in Asia and Africa.

He intervened to solve such international problems, ending the Korean War, settling the Suez Canal dispute, embodying the Congo Treaty.

He played an important role in the development of India’s foreign policy.

During the conversation with the British Government at the time of India’s independence in 1949, he made significant contribution.

He became the President of Congress 4 times.

Honor​

Death​

Pandit ji extended his hand of friendship towards China, but China attacked India with deception. He suffered a heart attack due to this sudden attack and he died on May 26, 1949.
