8 Parts of Speech Definition and Examples

All the words in English are classified into 8 groups which are called as parts of speech. That means there are total 8 parts of speech in English. These help us to analyze any sentence and well understand them.

Below is the list of 8 Parts of Speech:
  1. Noun
  2. Pronoun
  3. Verb
  4. Adjective
  5. Adverb
  6. Conjunction
  7. Preposition
  8. Interjection
Let us explore all of these one by one.

1. Noun​

It is nothing but a naming word. We use thousands of nouns every day.

A name given to any person, place, animal, bird or object is called as noun.

Examples : Maharashtra, India, state, river, doll, computer, girl, man, rocket etc.

The list is non-ending.

It can be of one word or combination of two words like John Monte, KK Market etc.

Noun is again having 5 sub-types:
  1. Common Noun
  2. Proper Noun
  3. Material Noun
  4. Collective Noun
  5. Abstract Noun

1. Common Noun​

A general name given to any person, place, animal, bird, river, city etc is called Common Noun.

Some more examples:

state, country, woman, game, school, surname, society, doctor, employee etc.

2. Proper Noun​

A particular name given to any person, place, animal, bird, river, city etc is called Proper Noun.

Examples:

Pune, Canada, Africa, Shirin, George, Nile, Times of India etc.

Proper noun always starts with a capital letter.

3. Material Noun​

Material Noun is the name of the material from which things are made.

Ex: Gold, Iron, Silver etc.

It is a material that can be measured or weighed but cannot be counted.

They are the ingredients which are used to make other objects.

All Material Nouns are physical or tangible substances.

These are all raw materials. Many of these materials are natural but some are also man-made. The sources of those who are natural are plants, animals or nature.

4. Collective Noun​

A name given to a collection of something is called Collective Noun.

It can be a name of a collection of some objects such as books, keys, flowers, chairs etc or it can be a collection of living organisms such as humans, animals, birds etc.

5. Abstract Noun​

Things we cannot touch are called abstract nouns. examples : thoughts, happiness, bravery, honesty, beauty and so on.

We cannot use our senses to identify Abstract Noun. Meaning we cannot hear their voice with our ears, cannot smell them from the nose, the skin does not feel them, they cannot be tasted by the tongue, the eyes cannot see them.

2. Pronoun​

The word that comes in place of a noun in a sentence is called pronoun.

Examples:

I, me, we, you, he, she, it, they, him, her, them, their, our etc.

  4. Relative Pronoun

3. Verb​

It is nothing but an action expressed in a sentence.

Examples:

play, jump, was, does, keep, arrive, get, fly, take etc.

The verb may be Main verb or associative verb, it may be transitive or intransitive.

Action that means verb can be in any of the three tenses- present tense, past tense, future tense.

4. Adjective​

The word that gives more information about the name is called an adjective.

Examples:

tall building, clever girl, beautiful flower, sharp weapon, wide wall

5. Adverb​

The word which gives extra information about verb is called adverb.

Examples of Adverbs​

  • Seeta plays well.
  • The car is travelling very fast.
  • She has studied hard.
  • I ate very little.

6. Conjunction​

Conjunction is a word that joins two words, two sentences, two clauses or two phrases.

Their specialty is that they shorten the sentence without changing its meaning. It makes the particular sentence more simple.

Examples- and, but, or, so, because etc.

  1. Coordinating Conjunction
  2. Subordinating Conjunction

7. Preposition​

Preposition is a word that shows a relationship between two nouns or two pronouns or between a noun and a pronoun.

This word is used before a noun or pronoun.

Examples of Prepositions are – on, under, above, near, far, with, without, for, of, off, downward, inside, outside etc.

8. Interjection​

This part of speech is used to express our feelings, emotions or thoughts.

An exclamation mark is used after interjection.

Examples of interjection are hurray!, Hey!, alas!, wow!, Bravo! etc.
