My Favourite Festival Essay: Diwali

My favorite Festival is none other than ‘Diwali’ which is also known as ‘The Festival of Light’.

This festival is one of the most important festivals of Hindu dharm. It is celebrated in October or November month every year.

Many stories are linked with this festival. One of the stoies is related to hindu epic Ramayana. According to theory, Rama, the eldest son of king Dashrath, defeated evil demon Ravana who kidnapped Rama’s wife, Sita.

On his arrival to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, all villagers welcomed him by lighting lamps called diyas. That’s why we lit diyas on the auspicious days of Diwali.

Second story is related to God Krishna. This story tells that God Krishna saved sixteen-thousand women from Narakasura, an evil again.

That means Diwali is an fesival for victory of good over evil. On this festival goddess Laxmi is also worshipped.

Diwali is a festival of multiple days. Vasubaras, Dhanatrayodashi, Narakchaturdashi, Laxmipujan, Bhaubeej and Diwali Padwa.

On Vasubaras sweets are offered to cows. Cows are worshipped on this day.

Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanteras and Laxmipujan are the days on which people worship wealth in their houses. There is a custom to purchase something precious on the day of Dhanteras.

Narakchaturdashi is also called as Choti Diwali. People wake up early in the morning, apply aromatic oil on the whole body and then take a bath with one of the fragrant soap. It is believed that this removes all the sins. New clothes are wore on this day.

Bhai dooj is the day on which sister performs a tilak ceremony with her brother. She makes a lavish meal for her brother and pray for long life of him. Brothers give a nice and unforgettable gift to their sisters.

Evenings in Diwali festival are interesting and charming. All people light their homes with lit lamps.

A lot of sweet and spicy dishes are made in every home like ladduu, karanji, chakli, chivda, shankarpali, anarse and many more.

People share these dishes with their friends, families and neighbors. Diwali wishes are given to each other.

Small kids enjoy this festival a lot. They make mud forts as well as burn different types of crackers.

This is the festival for which people await for the whole year. The preparations for arrival of this festival start 15 to 20 days before.
